Dublin By Day
Kilmainham Gaol
This is one of the largest decommissioned jails in Europe and certainly one of the most impressive.
Kilmainham Gaol played a very important role in Irish history, particularly in some of the most patriotic and tragic episodes from 1780’s to 1924 as Ireland struggled to become an independent nation. Today it is a stunning museum and event venue. Ask us about booking a place on one of their guided tours.
Trinity College Dublin
Trinity College Dublin is Ireland’s oldest, and most famous, university is at the opposite end of Grafton Street from the Fitzwilliam Hotel. A pleasant five minute stroll away, Trinity dates from the sixteenth century and has one of the world’s most beautiful libraries which contains over 1,000,000 volumes. It has Irelands most extensive collection of manuscripts and early printed books, including the world famous, priceless, 8th Century Book of Kells which is considered to be the most beautiful manuscript in existence today.
Dublinia
Take a walk up to Christ Church Cathedral and visit Dublinia, a collection of three exhibitions that showcase the history of the city. Viking Dublin will take you back to the founding of the city 1,000 years ago and you can experience life on a Viking ship, visit a Viking house and walk down a Viking street. Medieval Dublin has a busy medieval market, a merchant’s house and a noisy street. Finally, the History Hunters shows how we know about Dublin’s past, with artefacts on display, an excavation site, a lab and historical archives.
